Belur a historic town in the Hassan district of the Indian state of Karnataka was the first capital of the Hoysala Empire. The town lies on the banks of the river Yagachi. Earlier name of Belur was Velapuri.
Chennakeshava Temple, Belur
Belur is a popular tourist destination in Karnataka & also Belur Chennakeshava is a home deity of many people in Karnataka. The major tourist attraction in Belur is the Belur Chennakeshava Temple. This Temple was built by Hoysala Vishnuvardhana in the year 1117 AD in commemoration of his victory against the Chola viceroy of Talakad. The Temple is built using soapstone & is in the Hoysala standard of star shaped foundation.
